Bulawayo City Council has urged residents to walk more and share vehicles as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion in the central business district and cut carbon emissions.

The call was made by the council’s corporate communications manager, Nesisa Mpofu, in remarks reported by CITE and republished by Pindula News.

Mpofu said the local authority wants to encourage a walking culture in the CBD, arguing that Bulawayo’s central area is not extensive in terms of distances.

“Our thrust as a city is that at some point, we need to encourage residents and ourselves to adopt the culture of walking in the central business district,” Mpofu said.

“The CBD of Bulawayo is not very vast in terms of kilometres, so sometimes we encourage you to park your car or leave it at home and walk, because at the moment there are a lot of vehicles coming in.”

She also said families and communities could ease pressure on roads by sharing vehicles, particularly where several cars from the same household travel in the same direction at the same time.

“Sometimes you find that in one household, three vehicles are leaving at the same time, all going in the same direction,” she said.

“If vehicles are shared — whether within families or communities, it will also help us reduce our carbon emissions as a city.”

The council’s message comes as local authorities in Zimbabwe increasingly link traffic management to wider environmental concerns, including the need to reduce urban emissions.

While the Bulawayo initiative focuses on the CBD, the discussion is relevant to other towns, including urban centres in Mashonaland Central, where congestion and parking pressure can increase during peak hours, market days and major public events.
