Beyoncé has shared how her and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, inspired the rapper to grow out and embrace his natural hair, after the teenager struggled with confidence about her own curls when she was younger.
The singer, 44, narrated a video posted on Sunday, June 21, documenting Jay-Z’s hair journey as part of content for her haircare line, Cécred. The clip shows his locs being carefully combed out and includes family footage of Blue Ivy spending time with her father.
“Our daughter was about 5, and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at the time,” Beyoncé says in the video. “When she told her father that, it inspired Jay to grow out his hair.”
She adds: “We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls.”
Beyoncé said Blue Ivy “had no idea that her father’s hair had texture like hers”, and noted that after wearing locs for eight years, Jay-Z became what she called Cécred’s “most loyal customer”.
In the same video, Beyoncé explained that Jay-Z chose to comb out his locs so he could wear an afro in honour of his late father, Adnis Reeves. Jay-Z debuted the afro while headlining The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, backed by The Roots.
Beyoncé said the choice was linked to Reeves’ favourite basketball team, the Philadelphia 76ers, and his signature hairstyle, which was also an afro.
“On show day, his ‘fro was beautiful, from start to finish,” Beyoncé says in the video, as it shows clips of Jay-Z performing on stage and Beyoncé dancing with their children in the crowd.
She ends by thanking her husband for trusting her brand during the process. “I want to thank Jay for trusting Cécred on his hair journey,” she says. “He is forever the blueprint.”
