Government has declared four liberation war veterans national heroes posthumously ahead of the 2026 Heroes Day commemorations, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda has said.

The four are Petros Khumalo, Shumirai Wekwete, Joseph Zethi Dube and Herbert Zaba Sambo. Dr Soda announced the posthumous declarations at a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare following Cabinet deliberations.

Dr Soda said Heroes Day commemorations will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, under the theme “Lest We Forget”, with the main event set for the National Heroes Acre.

He added that the register of national heroes and heroines has been updated and now stands at 254, including the four newly declared heroes.

As part of the 2026 programme, Dr Soda said the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has begun phase two of the rehabilitation of Zimbabwe Liberation War heritage sites in Mozambique and Zambia.

He said the ministry is focusing on four sites in Mozambique — Tembue, Nyangao, Doroi and Chicualacuala — and completing work at six sites in Zambia: Freedom Camp, Nampundwe, Mkushi, Mlungushi, Kavalamanja and St Mary’s Kabwe.

Dr Soda said government also plans to start work at the Boma site in Angola, where a cenotaph bearing a roll of honour is expected to be built, alongside a mass grave, ablution facilities and a perimeter fence.

He also outlined preparations for the 2026 Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations, scheduled for August 11 at Rufaro Stadium in Harare.

The theme for the 2026 Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations will be “ZDF: Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030,” Dr Soda said.

He said planned highlights include the ZDF Community Assistance Week, the President’s address, a military parade and displays, entertainment by civilian groups and a ZDF sports day.

According to Dr Soda, the ZDF Community Assistance Week will run from July 27 to 31, 2026, culminating in the handover of completed projects constructed by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in collaboration with partners.
