The remains of five liberation war icons recently granted National Hero status by President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be reinterred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on Thursday, as part of this year’s Heroes Day commemorations.
The reinterment will be attended by close family members, and comes under the 2026 Heroes Day theme, “Lest We Forget”, which honours sacrifices made during the liberation struggle that led to Zimbabwe’s independence from colonial rule.
The five national heroes are Cde Gwakuba Ndlovu, Cde Petros Khumalo, Cde Herbert Zaba Sambo, Cde Joseph Zethi Dube and Cde Shumirai Wekwete.
The commemorations are expected to reaffirm the country’s stated commitment to preserving the legacy of men and women whose contributions shaped Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
National Heroes Acre is the official burial site for individuals recognised for their role in the liberation struggle and other national service, with annual Heroes Day events drawing participation from Government officials, families of the fallen and members of the public.
