Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have scaled up anti-drunk driving operations across the country, with officers mounting stricter roadblocks and increasing night patrols as part of efforts to curb road traffic accidents.

The development was reported by ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi in remarks carried by state media, in which he said police have heightened enforcement targeting motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In Mashonaland Central, residents and motorists have in recent weeks reported seeing more police checkpoints on key routes linking Bindura, Shamva, Mazowe, Guruve, Mount Darwin and Rushinga, particularly during evening hours and at weekends.

The intensified campaign comes as authorities continue to urge drivers to obey traffic laws, including speed limits and vehicle roadworthiness requirements, and to avoid driving after consuming alcohol.

Police have repeatedly warned that drunk driving remains a major contributor to serious crashes, especially at night when visibility is reduced and fatigue can also affect drivers.

Motorists are advised to carry valid driver’s licences and vehicle documents, ensure passengers use seatbelts, and plan for safe transport where alcohol is involved, including using designated drivers.

Bindura Eye will continue to follow updates on enforcement operations and any official statistics released regarding arrests, fines or accident trends linked to the current campaign.
