Transport and logistics firm Transvaal Africa is set to invest over US$1 billion to develop a cargo village at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (RGM) in Harare. The project, launched in partnership with the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ), aims to transform trade logistics through a smart city facility accommodating grading, sorting, and packaging services.
The cargo village will be designated a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), offering liberal economic regulations, tax breaks, and streamlined processes to boost trade and attract investment. Central to the development are cold chain facilities to support agro-processing and the preservation of perishable goods, enabling farmers and exporters to access global markets efficiently.
Transvaal’s Chief Executive Engineer Patson Moyo said the project has received all regulatory and environmental approvals, with groundbreaking expected in the first quarter of 2026. The initial phase includes runway and terminal construction, followed by warehousing and additional amenities. The facility aims to anchor Zimbabwe’s export value chain, particularly strengthening the agriculture and minerals sectors, ensuring inclusive economic participation.
The venture aligns with global trends of developing airports into commercial hubs, akin to projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Dubai. At least 40 percent of construction will involve local contractors, and about 3,000 direct jobs are expected to be created, with indirect employment potentially reaching 10,000.
ACZ CEO Tawanda Gusha confirmed that the cargo village complements ongoing airport expansion, including runway extension plans. The new secondary runway will enhance operational resilience and accommodate growing passenger and cargo traffic. The development aims to position RGM International Airport as a regional aviation hub competing with major airports in southern Africa.
