A woman from Binga, Matabeleland North, died after she was attacked by a crocodile while fishing in the Zambezi River on Friday afternoon, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred at a fishing spot known locally as Ambush Alley. A witness account reported that the woman was fishing with a neighbour in shallow water when a crocodile emerged, attacked her and dragged her into deeper water.

Nearby fishermen reportedly responded after the woman’s companion screamed for help, and they threw stones in an attempt to force the crocodile to release her.

“The crocodile later left the body near some reeds after failing to pull it further into the water,” a source said, according to The Chronicle.

The body was later retrieved from the river by one of the fishermen before relatives and authorities were informed. It was taken to Binga District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem, the report said.

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident and appealed for caution around rivers and dams.

“I can confirm that a woman died after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing in the Zambezi River in Binga,” Insp Banda said.

He urged communities living near water bodies to remain vigilant, saying crocodile attacks were increasing in the area.

“We continue to urge fishermen and members of the public to remain vigilant when fishing or doing activities near rivers and dams. People should avoid entering waters known to have crocodiles, especially alone,” he said.
