A Mutare man has been ordered to perform 420 hours of community service after he was convicted of spreading what the court heard was a malicious false prophecy claiming prominent businessman Isau Fungai Mupfumi would die.
Pride Madziwana appeared before Mutare magistrate Poterai Gwezhira on Thursday. According to The Manica Post, the court heard Madziwana circulated the prediction despite acknowledging that Mupfumi was effective in his public duties.
In handing down sentence, Magistrate Gwezhira found the statements to be reckless and malicious, and said they could cause unnecessary panic and distress.
Madziwana was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour. Instead of serving the prison term, the court ordered him to complete 420 hours of unpaid work at the Mutare Civil Court.
