Harare is set to host the 2026 Africa Green Building Summit in September, with organisers saying the event will bring together policymakers, developers and financiers to discuss sustainable construction, green finance and climate-resilient urban development.
The announcement was made by Green Building Council of Zimbabwe (GBCZ) chairperson Dr Mike Juru at the Zimbabwe ESG and Sustainable Development Forum, which was convened by the GBCZ and the Sustainability Academy.
The Africa Green Building Summit is described by organisers as a leading continental meeting focused on sustainable building, climate goals and investment. Previous host countries include Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
Organisers said Zimbabwe was selected to host by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) and the Africa Regional Network of Green Building Councils (AfRN).
The summit has been set against the wider climate debate around the built environment. According to the information shared by organisers, buildings, construction and related infrastructure account for an estimated 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The 2026 summit theme is: “Building Africa’s Green Future: Policy, Practice, and Finance for a Climate-Resilient Built Environment.” Organisers said the three-day meeting will draw between 150 and 200 delegates from Africa and beyond, including Green Building Councils, senior government officials, development partners, built-environment professionals, financial institutions, private sector developers, researchers and emerging professionals, including youth and women.
Organisers outlined a programme intended to move from knowledge-sharing to implementation. Day One is expected to focus on practice, including peer learning and case studies across areas such as affordable housing, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings. Day Two is expected to focus on policy discussions around building codes, climate-policy alignment, urban resilience and energy-efficiency standards. Day Three will focus on finance, with sessions on instruments such as green bonds, sustainability-linked loans, climate funds, ESG investment readiness and valuation of green buildings.
Organisers said the summit will also include an exhibition pavilion showcasing technologies and materials, technical workshops, a Youth and Women in Green Building Forum, site visits to green-certified buildings in Harare and a summit communiqué capturing commitments and next steps.
Dr Juru’s announcement at the ESG forum also called for private sector participation, with organisers saying the summit provides a platform for Zimbabwean developers, construction firms and financiers to engage with continental policy direction and evolving ESG expectations.
Organisers said the summit will be run through a joint committee comprising the GBCZ, WorldGBC, AfRN and the Government of Zimbabwe, supported by technical working groups covering programme content, finance, communications, logistics and exhibition management.
