Twenty-four of the 25 Chirumhanzu Rural District Council (RDC) councillors met at Mvuma Stranger Hall on 26 May 2026 and passed a resolution to suspend council chairperson Thembinkosi Nyoni Miti.

The Chirumhanzu District Development Coordinator (DDC), Jorum Chimedza, confirmed the decision, saying the matter would be referred to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works for guidance.

According to a charge sheet seen by Masvingo Mirror, councillors listed several allegations against Miti, including appointing himself to attend external events on behalf of council, mismanagement of council affairs resulting in poor service delivery, and unauthorised use of council funds.

The charge sheet also alleges unauthorised use of estate funds, running parallel structures, irregular acquisition of a council vehicle without following procedure, and failure to account to councillors.

Chimedza said he could not provide further details at this stage. “I can confirm that councillors suspended their chairperson but currently I am not in a position to give more details because we are going to write to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works which will give us direction on the way forward,” he said.

Miti confirmed the development but said he did not attend the meeting. He accused political opponents of organising councillors to remove him, and maintained that the allegations were baseless, arguing that he is not an executive chairperson.

Chirumhanzu RDC chief executive officer Lovemore Chatikobo said he was not aware of the suspension at the time, explaining that he was away in Masvingo. “I am not aware of the issue because I was away attending a meeting in Masvingo,” he said.

The suspension is expected to be handled through established local government processes, with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works set to provide direction on the next steps.
