Former Commonwealth flyweight boxing champion Arifonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika has not yet taken delivery of a vehicle donated by Harare businessman Wicknell Chivayo after it emerged that the retired boxer does not have a valid driver’s licence, according to a report published by The Herald.

Zvenyika, who won the Commonwealth flyweight title in 1998, was presented with a new car and cash. However, the dealership said the vehicle cannot be released to him until he produces a driver’s licence.

In comments quoted by The Herald, Zvenyika said the gifts came unexpectedly and that he had been caught unprepared because neither he nor his wife, Jesman Zvenyika, holds a driver’s licence.

“I was caught unprepared because I do not have a driver’s licence — neither does my wife,” Zvenyika said. He added that he intends to obtain a licence as soon as possible before collecting the vehicle.

Zvenyika said the cash assistance would help him address medical expenses and school fees. “I was struggling to meet medical bills and even paying school fees for my children,” he was quoted as saying.

According to the report, Zvenyika viewed the Toyota Aqua at the dealer and tested the comfort of the vehicle, and his wife also viewed it. The couple reportedly returned home in a hired car because they could not take the vehicle from the dealership.

The dealership operator, identified as Madzibaba Chipaga, was quoted saying the car will be released once Zvenyika obtains a valid licence, adding that the dealer could not allow a test drive for an unlicensed driver.

The report also cited Zvenyika’s past experience with driving without a licence. It stated that after rising to fame he bought a Toyota Crown using prize money from boxing, but was later arrested and convicted for driving without a valid driver’s licence.

One of Zvenyika’s friends, Harrison Risinamhodzi, was reported to have accompanied him, while fellow former boxer Charles Manyuchi was said to have collected a vehicle and cash on the same day.
