Egypt and Zimbabwe used a diplomatic reception in Harare marking the 74th anniversary of Egypt’s 23 July Revolution to reaffirm what officials described as longstanding historical ties between the two countries.

The reception was hosted by Egypt’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Dr Maha Serag El-Din, and was attended by Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, H.E. Ambassador Albert Chimbindi, alongside government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the business community, think tanks and members of the Egyptian community living in Zimbabwe.

In her address, Dr Serag El-Din said the 1952 revolution remained a defining moment in Egypt’s modern history, reflecting aspirations for independence, national dignity, social justice and development. She also linked the anniversary to Africa’s wider liberation history, saying the events of 1952 inspired other African nations pursuing independence.

She reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to African solidarity and cooperation, saying this work continues under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Dr Serag El-Din also said Egypt was committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Zimbabwe.

Speaking on behalf of Zimbabwe, Ambassador Chimbindi said Harare valued the historic relationship between the two countries, noting that ties date back to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. He also commended progress in bilateral relations across several areas and pointed to a shared intention to deepen the partnership.

The event also included a cultural exhibition featuring replicas of ancient Egyptian artefacts, providing guests with what organisers said was an opportunity to experience elements of Egypt’s cultural heritage alongside the diplomatic commemorations.

The reception ended with both sides emphasising continued cooperation and solidarity between Egypt and Zimbabwe.
