HARARE – Mutapa Energy Resources (MER) chief executive Innocent Rukweza has been appointed chairman of the Lithium Association of Zimbabwe, succeeding Xuedong Gong.

In a statement, MER’s board, management and staff said they were proud of the appointment and backed Rukweza to help guide the country’s lithium industry.

“We extend our sincere congratulations to Mr Innocent Rukweza on his appointment as chairman of the Lithium Association of Zimbabwe,” the company said. “We are proud of this remarkable achievement and wish him every success in his new role as he leads and advances the growth of Zimbabwe’s lithium industry.”

The Lithium Association of Zimbabwe represents stakeholders in what has become one of the country’s fastest-growing mining sectors, driven by rising global demand for minerals used in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy technologies.

MER is part of the Mutapa Investment Fund, Zimbabwe’s sovereign wealth fund.

Rukweza’s appointment comes as Zimbabwe continues to position itself among Africa’s leading lithium producers, with industry players calling for more co-ordinated leadership around investment attraction, value addition, sustainable mining practices and engagement with policymakers.

Stakeholders will be watching how the association’s agenda develops under the new chair, particularly as the country seeks to increase the benefits it derives from lithium through downstream processing and wider participation in the value chain.
