Former Commonwealth boxing champion Arifonso Zvenyika says he is starting “a new chapter” in his life after obtaining a driver’s licence, a step he said would help him take ownership of a vehicle donated by businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
Zvenyika, who is from Mbare, said he acquired the licence on Wednesday, enabling him to complete the process of taking ownership of the car he had been given.
He also thanked Chivayo for providing cash to assist with the medical treatment of his wife, and said he has since bought a residential stand in the eastern suburbs of Harare where he plans to relocate.
Reflecting on his past, Zvenyika said he regrets squandering his earlier earnings from boxing and retiring without securing property.
“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child,” Zvenyika said.
“When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
“I lost my first chance when I got money as a boxing champion.
“I squandered my wealth and retired without owning a residential stand.
“But God has given me another chance through Sir Wicknell Chivayo.”
Zvenyika said he now wants to live differently, describing himself as “born again” and saying he intends to use the car to support his faith-based outreach.
“It was a time of madness when I squandered my wealth but this time I am a man – I no longer behave like a child,” he said.
He also spoke about his family, saying he would stand by his wife after what he described as difficult years.
“My wife endured with me during my time of madness and she will not be forsaken — so I will stand by my family,” he said.
Zvenyika’s story has drawn attention to how former sports stars manage life after competition, including the role that personal support networks and financial planning can play in long-term stability.
