Thousands of football supporters are expected in Bulawayo on Sunday afternoon for the latest showdown between Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium, with fan leaders calling for calm and enjoyment of the match.
The two clubs are among Zimbabwe’s most supported teams and, according to figures cited in the report, have won a combined 29 league titles since 1963. Dynamos have 21 championships, while Highlanders have claimed eight.
Supporters began travelling early, with one bus from Harare carrying Dynamos fans reported to have arrived in Bulawayo by 7am.
Bulawayo Metropolitan Dynamos Chapter chairman Mathias Taderera said the early arrival was an advance group, with more supporters expected later in the day.
“This is the first group; we have 10 buses arriving at noon and we will engage in a roadshow. We are preaching peace and we call upon supporters to come and enjoy the game,” said Taderera.
Dynamos Bulawayo Chapter vice chairman, Comrade Shumba, also appealed for restraint among fans as the teams meet in one of the country’s most high-profile fixtures.
The rivalry has a long history. The report notes that the clubs had cordial relations prior to 1976, when Highlanders pulled out of the elite league in protest over claims that Dynamos were being favoured by the late John Madzima and Peter Nemapare football league.
The teams have also been home to several Soccer Stars of the Year, including Moses Chunga, Zenzo Moyo, Memory Mucherahowa, Japhet Mparutsa, Tawanda Muparati, Dazzy Kapenya, the late Mercedes Sibanda, George Shaya and Ernest Kamba.
While the match is in Bulawayo, the fixture draws attention across Zimbabwe, including Mashonaland Central, where both clubs have strong supporter bases. Fans travelling are being encouraged by organisers to prioritise safety, peace and respect for others throughout the day.
