The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a press statement disputing what it describes as “misleading” and “incorrect facts” circulating on social media regarding the death of Detective Sergeant Milika Laison (43) and the ongoing Sergeants’ Developmental Training Course at ZRP Ntabazinduna Academy.
In the statement dated 29 June 2026, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner P. Nyathi said the late Detective Sergeant Milika died in a road traffic accident on 25 June 2026 at around 10pm. According to the police account, the crash occurred at the 203km peg along the Masvingo–Beitbridge Road while he was driving a Honda Fit towards Masvingo, having been travelling from Beitbridge.
ZRP said claims that the detective sergeant was coming from Ntabazinduna Police Academy were false. The police said trainers at the academy checked their records and found “no record of the late member checking in at the academy on 19th June 2026 when other trainees came”. The statement added that a roll call conducted the next day, 20 June, by the training coordinator showed he was among those who had not reported for training.
Police headquarters further stated that CID Headquarters training later advised the academy that Detective Sergeant Milika had tendered a resignation notice and was not coming for the course, leading to his name being removed from the list of absent trainees.
However, the police also said that if it is established that the late detective sergeant “sneaked into the training academy on 19th June 2026 using unorthodox means or without being accounted for and later sneaked out on 20th June 2026”, action would be taken against instructors who would have failed to follow set training standards and protocol.
Commissioner Nyathi said ZRP command was aware of social media posts attributed to the late member alleging “inhuman treatment” by instructors at the depot. The statement said the Commissioner-General of Police has directed that “full facts be established” to assess the veracity of the allegations, including claims that the late detective sergeant may have used his personal vehicle to access the academy. Police said trainees are barred from bringing private vehicles to the training institution.
The statement further said “it is on record that the late member was at his mother station, CID Beitbridge on 20th June 2026 and engaged his Officer-In-Charge.”
While extending condolences to the Milika family, ZRP criticised those it accused of using social media to “misrepresent facts” and “cause alarm” within the police service. The police urged the family to engage ZRP for “correct facts” and not be misled by “social media activists or posts”.
