Police in Wedza, Mashonaland East, have launched a manhunt for a Wedza High School Mathematics teacher accused of raping a Form 1 learner during extra lessons held at a private residence.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the report and said officers are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect, identified by police as Tinashe Choto.
In a warning aimed at parents and guardians, Insp Chazovachii urged families to closely monitor children’s movements and to ensure any extra lessons are conducted at established school premises rather than private homes.
Police said the suspect, who reportedly lives in the Springdale area of Wedza, allegedly invited the 15-year-old learner (name withheld) to his residence for extra lessons.
According to the police account, the learner attended the extra lessons on 23 July. It is alleged the suspect then grabbed her as she was seated at the entrance of the house, dragged her into a room and raped her once. Police further allege the learner was threatened with death if she disclosed what had happened.
Police said the learner later went home and informed a neighbour, who then alerted the child’s mother. A report was made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police on 26 July and investigations are continuing.
Insp Chazovachii said anyone with information that may assist police should contact ZRP Wedza on 0773500237.
