The Government says it is strengthening retirement preparedness for civil servants through a nationwide awareness campaign meant to improve understanding of pension procedures, retirement planning and employee benefits.
The Public Service Commission (PSC), which is leading the initiative, says the programme is intended to reduce pension processing delays and improve efficiency within the public service by addressing common paperwork and knowledge gaps that slow applications.
This week the campaign reached Masvingo, where civil servants from various Government departments received guidance on retirement planning, pension application procedures, documentation requirements and employment benefits.
Participants said the training clarified the importance of submitting complete documents and keeping personal records up to date to avoid delays after leaving employment.
“We are happy with the training that we received today. A number of issues were addressed, including gaps that existed such as the submission of incomplete documents for pension processing. As we return to our workstations, we are now equipped with the relevant information and will cascade it to other civil servants in the Ministry of Health and Child Care,” one participant said.
Another participant said the workshop had improved understanding of what is required before retirement.
“This workshop has been very informative because many of us did not fully understand the pension application process or the documents required before retirement. We now appreciate the importance of planning ahead, keeping our records up to date and understanding the benefits available to us, which gives us confidence that we will transition into retirement without unnecessary challenges,” the participant said.
Speaking on behalf of the Secretary to the Service Commissions, Mrs Sibusisiwe Zembe, PSC Paymaster Mr Twoboy Shoko said the campaign was designed to close knowledge gaps that often result in incomplete or inaccurate applications.
“The responsibility of planning for retirement falls squarely on civil servants, yet a significant knowledge gap persists regarding pension rules and benefits. This creates major operational challenges for the Pensions, Payroll and Human Resources departments, which are frequently overwhelmed by incomplete or inaccurate applications submitted to Head Office.
“This campaign seeks to bridge that gap by raising awareness about retirement planning and ensuring employees fully understand their entitlements. The Public Service Commission’s Capacity Building Awareness Campaign is essential in ensuring every public servant transitions into retirement with confidence, dignity and financial security,” Shoko said.
The PSC also said the campaign is promoting the GovPay Integrated Payroll and Personnel Management System, which it expects will improve efficiency, accuracy and transparency in payroll administration and pension calculations.
The Government initiative is aligned with National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) priorities, which include efficient public service delivery, digital transformation and stronger social protection systems.
