Air Zimbabwe has restarted direct flights between Harare and London, with its inaugural service landing at London Gatwick on Thursday, marking the national carrier’s return to a UK airport after a break of about 14 years.

The direct link had been dormant since 2012, meaning passengers travelling between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom have largely relied on connecting flights through third countries, adding time and cost for families, business travellers and tourists.

Senior government and airline officials were among the passengers on the first flight into Gatwick, including the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon Adv F.T. Mhona (MP), and the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon T. Mnangagwa. Air Zimbabwe’s board and executive leadership also travelled on the service, led by board chair Dr Silvanos Gwarinda and chief executive officer Mr Edmund Makona.

In remarks delivered in London, Mhona described the UK route as strategically important for Zimbabwe because of “the depth of our shared history, the breadth of our commercial and cultural ties and the size of our diaspora on these shores”. He added that the flight’s arrival at Gatwick was “the most visible expression” of renewed engagement between the two countries.

Beyond passenger travel, the restored route is expected to matter for trade-linked movement such as time-sensitive cargo. Exporters of perishable products, including horticultural produce, have often pointed to the value of shorter transit times and direct access to major European hubs for maintaining quality and market competitiveness.

The service is also seen as a potential boost to tourism, with the United Kingdom historically a key source market for Zimbabwe. Direct flights can reduce journey complexity for visitors heading to destinations such as Victoria Falls, Hwange and Mana Pools, while also helping to strengthen the overall profile of Zimbabwe as a destination for business and leisure travel.

However, aviation analysts and industry observers note that the long-term test for any long-haul route is consistency. Maintaining regular schedules, strong load factors, reliable aircraft availability and predictable ticketing over multiple seasons is what ultimately determines whether a route becomes sustainable.

For many Zimbabweans based in the UK—including those with family ties in Mashonaland Central provinces and beyond—the return of a direct Harare–London option is likely to be welcomed as it simplifies travel plans and reduces the risk of missed connections.
