Sungura musician Alick Macheso is set to headline this year’s Africa Day celebrations in Gweru on Sunday, in what organisers say will be his first performance in the Midlands capital in 2026.

Organisers said the event is expected to draw music fans from across the province, with a programme combining live performances and DJ sets as part of the Africa Day commemorations.

Macheso will be supported by MC Jah Soshea, DJ 007, Dave Harry, Core Vybz Band, Rigiyaan, Xiddo and Peter Pee, with organisers saying the line-up will include Amapiano and Zimdancehall alongside sungura.

Promoter Social Siwawa said the event has been planned to use music and cultural expression to highlight the meaning of Africa Day for different age groups.

“Our goal is to ensure that both the older and younger generations continue to appreciate and understand the significance of Africa Day,” Siwawa said. “The show comes at the right time and, although it is themed as a Sungura Night, we have also included DJs and artistes from other genres to ensure everyone is entertained.”

Siwawa said preparations had been completed and that organisers have seen strong interest from fans across age groups. “The excitement from fans shows that sungura music remains relevant, even among the younger generation. Several Gen Z fans have expressed eagerness to watch the sungura legend perform live,” he said.

Fans quoted ahead of the show included Shantel Jenya of Mkoba suburb, who said: “I’ve never had the opportunity to attend Baba Sharo’s previous shows, but I’ve always loved his music. This time, I’m definitely not missing out.”

Another fan, Jayden Phiri from Shurugwi, said the concert will be a family outing. “I grew up listening to Macheso because he’s my father’s favourite musician, but I was too young to attend his shows before. This time, my dad is taking me with him,” he said.

Africa Day is commemorated annually on May 25 and marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), in 1963. The day is observed across the continent as a time to reflect on African unity, cultural diversity and shared aspirations.
