Police in Harare are investigating an armed robbery in Avondale in which a family lost US$30,000 in cash and several household valuables, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) saying the suspects threatened to kill a pregnant woman during the raid.
In a report attributed to the ZRP, the complainant was identified as James Nyamaropa (45), who was asleep with his wife, Sheila Chigumira (41), when their main bedroom door was allegedly forced open.
Police said three men wearing balaclavas and gloves entered the room. Two of the suspects were allegedly armed with machetes, while another carried an unidentified pistol. The suspects demanded cash, according to the ZRP account.
The ZRP said the woman, who is pregnant, was threatened and told she would be killed if she did not produce money. Police said she handed over US$30,000.
As the group left, the suspects allegedly told the family in Shona, “wauraiswa nevanhu vekubasa kwako”, which translates to: “you’ve been sold out by people at your work.” Police said the remark suggested the complainant may have been targeted through information provided by colleagues.
After the attackers left, the family discovered additional property had been taken from different rooms. Police said a 75-inch television and a home theatre system were stolen from the lounge.
From another room, the suspects allegedly took a 65-inch television and three Samsung mobile phones — an A70, an S20 and a Z Fold — which were said to have been left charging.
Police put the total value of the stolen cash and property at US$33,850. The case was reported by H-Metro and republished by Pindula News.
The incident comes as residents across Zimbabwe, including in Mashonaland Central, continue to raise concerns about violent break-ins and the targeting of households believed to keep large amounts of cash. Police have previously urged communities to share information that can help identify suspects and prevent robberies.
