Part of Lalani Lodge in Bulawayo was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Friday after a blaze broke out at the Fortunes Gate property shortly after midnight.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo said emergency services received the call at about 12.30am and crews arrived to find a double-storey building already heavily ablaze.
“On arrival, the brigade found a double-storey structure built of brick under thatched grass well alight, with raging flames visible as far as Mater Dei Hospital,” Moyo said.
He said six fire engines and two Bulawayo City Council water bowsers were dispatched and reached the scene within minutes. Firefighters carried out a risk assessment and started evacuation procedures before beginning efforts to contain the fire.
Moyo said two teams were deployed to tackle the flames in the main building, while a third team worked to stop the fire spreading to nearby structures.
The fire was brought under control after about an hour and a half, he said. While part of the lodge was badly damaged, other buildings at the property were saved.
No injuries or deaths were reported. The cause of the fire had not yet been established at the time the incident was reported.
