Zimbabweans consumed 4.62 million hectolitres of Chibuku last year, the highest volume recorded since 1998, according to figures contained in Delta Corporation’s latest trading update.
The opaque beer, popularly known as “shake-shake” because consumers typically shake the carton before drinking, remains one of the country’s most affordable alcoholic beverages and is widely consumed in both urban and rural communities.
Analysts quoted in a New Ziana report by Antony Chawagarira say the rise in volumes reflects the brand’s enduring popularity as well as the economic pressures affecting household spending. With high living costs, unemployment and shrinking disposable incomes continuing to affect many families, consumers are increasingly shifting away from more expensive lagers and imported beverages towards cheaper traditional options.
In many high-density suburbs, growth points and mining centres, Chibuku outlets continue to draw steady crowds, with the drink featuring prominently at social gatherings, weekend leisure spots and community events.

Retailers and vendors cited in the report said sales have remained strong even during periods when other products recorded slower demand, a trend linked to Chibuku’s relatively low price and its strong cultural identity.
However, the increased consumption may also signal deeper social and economic strain, with some observers suggesting that more people are turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism during difficult times.
The latest figures underline Chibuku’s continued dominance in Zimbabwe’s traditional beer market and its importance to the broader beverages sector. In Mashonaland Central, where mining communities, farming areas and growth points form a significant part of local economies, the trends reflected in Delta’s update are likely to mirror changes in everyday consumer spending patterns.
