Kwekwe Polytechnic has completed the first phase of a sports infrastructure refurbishment programme aimed at improving student wellness, strengthening campus life and widening access to quality sporting facilities for students, staff and the surrounding community.
The institution said modern sports amenities can play a role beyond recreation, creating opportunities for physical exercise, mental wellbeing and social interaction. It added that well-run sports spaces can help keep young people positively engaged, reducing vulnerability to drug and substance abuse and other harmful behaviours.
According to information released by the college, the Polytechnic’s management resolved in 2025 to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment and upgrading exercise targeting ageing sports infrastructure that had been in use for decades.
The first phase, now complete, focused on rehabilitating the basketball, netball and tennis courts. The upgraded facilities now have improved playing surfaces and standards, which the institution says place them among the better sporting amenities available at Zimbabwe’s tertiary institutions.
While the college did not provide a timeline for the next phases, the refurbishment programme signals a broader push by tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe to invest in student support services that promote healthy lifestyles and safer learning environments.
Sports development practitioners often point to the value of accessible facilities in building teamwork, discipline and community cohesion, particularly in settings where young people face growing pressures linked to unemployment, mental health challenges and drug misuse.
For communities around tertiary institutions, upgraded courts can also increase opportunities for organised sport, friendly competitions and shared use, especially where local recreational infrastructure is limited.
Bindura Eye will update readers as more verified information becomes available on the next stages of the refurbishment programme and any planned community access arrangements.
