Man held after toddler found injured in Cambridgeshire zoo crocodile enclosure

Police in the United Kingdom have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy was found inside a zoo’s crocodile enclosure in Cambridgeshire, England.

Cambridgeshire police said officers were called to the zoo at 1.24pm after reports of an incident involving the child, “during which he ended up in the crocodile enclosure”. The boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was said to be in a critical but stable condition.

Police added that specially trained officers were supporting the child and his family as investigations continue.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested. Police said they do not believe the man and the child are known to each other.

Detective Inspector Verity McCann said police were speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time “to understand more about the circumstances” of what she described as a “distressing incident”.

Johnsons of Old Hurst Zoo said the Tropical House, where alligators and crocodiles are kept, would remain closed until further notice, saying the decision was taken “out of respect for the family”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today,” the zoo said in a statement.

Ben Obese-Jecty, the Member of Parliament for Huntingdon, where the zoo is located, said senior officers were treating the matter as a “critical” incident and that a criminal investigation was under way. “My thoughts are with the young victim and his family during a hugely traumatic and difficult time,” he wrote on X.

Police have not released further details on how the child came to be inside the enclosure.
