Scottland players are set to receive US$10,000 each for being top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) table at this stage of the season, in what the club says will be the biggest single bonus paid to players in the competition.
Club president Scott Sakupwanya had initially pledged US$5,000 per player if the team finished top of the log after the first round of matches, but doubled the figure following a Matchday 18 victory over title challengers Hardrock at Rufaro.
The 2-0 win ensured Scottland’s position at the summit after 18 matches would not be affected by ongoing disciplinary proceedings linked to an unresolved Hardrock versus Dynamos match.
Scottland have 37 points from 18 matches and sit five points ahead of Hardrock, who have a game in hand pending the outcome of the disciplinary case. The champions would still remain top even if Hardrock are awarded points from the abandoned match.
Speaking on the club’s in-house platform, Sakupwanya said the squad had met its target and deserved to be rewarded.
“You have to pay players so that they stay happy. I had promised them US$5,000 for finishing top of the log after 18 games and I have since put it up to US$10,000,” he said.
“They are working, they need to feed their families.
“We don’t want them to go to South Africa. They must stay in Zimbabwe.
“My goal is to bring all the good players, who are out of the country, to return home and play in Zimbabwe.
“I am busy with potential sponsors so that our football means business.”
Sakupwanya said the team’s recent run had shown growing cohesion and was laying groundwork for the CAF Champions League, with the 2026/27 campaign expected to begin in August.
“The team has now gelled; we are winning matches without any complaints. We are on a good run against teams that had been in top form before we faced them – the likes of Herentals, CAPS United and now Hardrock,” he said.
He also referred to Hardrock owner Chahwanda, telling him: “welcome to football”, and added: “in football, I am the boss.”
Sakupwanya said he had already secured what he described as a “mega deal” in Dubai for the club next season, adding that there would be changes reflected on the team’s jerseys.
In recent weeks, Scottland have beaten Hardrock, Herentals and CAPS United. The three sides came into those matches in strong form but were all defeated, and none scored against Scottland in those fixtures.
