Nyaradzo Group finance director Tendayi Kanjanda has been elected president of the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute of Zimbabwe (CGIAZ), with the new leader saying the profession must adapt to artificial intelligence while protecting ethical standards.
CGIAZ said Kanjanda brings more than 20 years of executive leadership and board-level experience across finance, governance, risk management and strategic leadership.
He will be supported by two vice-presidents: Never Ncube, chief executive officer of Dandemutande, and Theresa Madziva, former assistant general manager for Finance and Corporate Services at the Tobacco Research Board.
In his remarks, Kanjanda announced a presidential theme focused on technology and ethics: “Future-Proofing Governance: Developing Ethical Leaders in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
“As the world embraces rapid technological change, governance professionals must be equipped not only with technical competence but also with the ethical leadership skills necessary to guide organisations responsibly,” he said. “Through this theme, I hope to position CGIAZ at the forefront of governance excellence while preserving the values of integrity, accountability and professionalism that define our Institute.”
Kanjanda said the changing business and regulatory environment requires governance professionals who are adaptable, ethical and forward-looking, adding that his theme aligns with his vision of positioning CGIAZ as a body that develops competent professionals who can support sustainable growth in both the public and private sectors.
He outlined priorities for his tenure that include strengthening member engagement and value, growing student and professional membership, enhancing continuous professional development programmes, and promoting good governance practice across Zimbabwe.
“We will actively engage regulators, policymakers, corporates and investors on governance matters. Through thought leadership, research, training programmes and stakeholder collaboration, CGIAZ can become a trusted voice on governance, accountability and ethical leadership,” he said.
On students, Kanjanda said the institute would strengthen mentorship programmes, create networking opportunities, provide career guidance workshops and work more closely with academic institutions.
He also said CGIAZ intends to expand outreach to universities, corporates and public-sector institutions, while increasing engagement through digital platforms.
Kanjanda said emerging issues such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, sustainability reporting and evolving governance standards mean the institute must continuously adapt. He added that technology would play a central role in improving digital communication, expanding online learning and enhancing member services.
He acknowledged economic uncertainty and shifting regulatory requirements as challenges, saying these would be managed through proactive planning, stakeholder engagement, innovation and prudent resource management.
On national development, Kanjanda said CGIAZ has a role in promoting good governance and accountability, which he described as foundations for economic growth, investor confidence and sustainable development.
Looking ahead, he said he wants to leave “a stronger, more visible and more influential Institute” that is financially sustainable and respected by stakeholders.
“I am deeply honoured and humbled by the trust placed in me to lead this prestigious institution and encourage all members, students and stakeholders to actively participate in the growth of our institute,” he said. “Together, through collaboration, professionalism and shared purpose, we can strengthen our profession and make a lasting contribution to our nation.”
