The United States Embassy in Harare held a reception on Thursday, June 4, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, using an American county fair theme to mark the milestone.
The embassy said the event brought together senior Zimbabwean government officials, members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, civil society representatives, academics and alumni of U.S. exchange programmes, as part of a year-long global commemoration being held through events around the world.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Dr Anxious Masuka, attended as Guest of Honour alongside U.S. Ambassador Pamela M. Tremont.
In her remarks, Ambassador Tremont reflected on America’s founding ideals and the people behind them. “In 1776, our founders gathered in Philadelphia. They were mostly farmers, merchants, and everyday people who believed in something bigger than themselves,” she said. “They believed in an idea – that ordinary people could govern themselves, that freedom and opportunity should belong to everyone.”
The ambassador also pointed to what she described as strong people-to-people ties between the United States and Zimbabwe, and urged greater economic engagement between the two countries.
“Both our countries value innovation and entrepreneurship,” she said. “We want to see American companies investing here. We want to see Zimbabwean companies accessing American markets and global supply chains. We want both our peoples to benefit from stronger economic ties.”
Explaining the county fair theme, Ambassador Tremont said fairs have been an American tradition for more than 200 years and represent community values. “A tradition for over 200 years, they’re where community values shine – hard work, neighborliness, self-reliance, and community spirit,” she said, adding that she sees similar values in Zimbabwe. “I think the term ubuntu describes the county fair vibe perfectly.”
Minister Masuka, according to the embassy, commended ongoing engagement between the two countries and called for deeper collaboration to attract investment, expand bilateral cooperation and support shared prosperity.
The embassy said the reception was supported through contributions from U.S. companies and brands operating in Zimbabwe, which it described as reflecting growing commercial ties between the United States and Zimbabwe.
