A Zimbabwean business executive, Jeremiah Madondo, was shot dead in South Africa after an altercation linked to his residential properties, with relatives saying he had been told to remove tenants from two houses ahead of 1 August 2026.

The killing happened on 19 July 2026. A family spokesperson, Ishmael Madondo, said relatives had been informed Jeremiah was shot multiple times, and that the dispute centred on three residential properties.

In a condolence message, Transnet Engineering confirmed his death and said Madondo had worked for the company for 28 years. The statement said he joined Transnet Engineering on 28 January 1998 and, at the time of his death, was acting as Corridor Quality Manager for the North Corridor, based in Vryheid.

Transnet Engineering said: “It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our dear colleague Mr Jeremiah Madondo on the 19th of July 2026. … Transnet Engineering would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues, during this difficult time.”

According to Ishmael Madondo, Jeremiah had been given notice to remove tenants at two of his houses before 1 August. He said the tenants were warned to vacate because there were claims that the properties would be taken over by South Africans.

“We lost a bread winner, a loving man who has been a source of inspiration,” Ishmael Madondo said. “We have been informed that he was shot to death over his three residential properties.”

A memorial service for Madondo was held last Friday at King and Queens Dorenfontain in South Africa, according to the family. His body was then taken to the Madondo homestead in Hayisoswi Village, Rusape, where he was buried on Sunday.

The circumstances of the shooting and any related criminal investigation were not detailed in the information made public by the family and employer at the time of reporting.
