Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera has credited Chief Fortune Charumbira with mentoring her during her time in the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), saying the experience helped prepare her for higher national office.
Mavetera made the remarks in Harare during her 40th birthday celebrations, held in the presence of senior ZANU PF figures and business leaders.
“Chief Charumbira played a key role in preparing me for a bigger position,” Mavetera said, referring to her time serving as part of Zimbabwe’s delegation to the PAP before the 2023 harmonised elections, after which President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed her to Cabinet.
Those at the event included ZANU PF Central Committee member and businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, while ZANU PF chairperson Oppah Muchinguri was the guest of honour, according to a report published by Spiked.
Mavetera’s tribute centred on her exposure to continental debates and legislative processes in the PAP, where Chief Charumbira has served as a long-standing member of Zimbabwe’s delegation and previously held the post of PAP president — one of Zimbabwe’s highest-profile roles within the African Union’s parliamentary structures.
Chief Charumbira, responding to the acknowledgement, praised President Mnangagwa for appointing women to senior roles in government. “President Mnangagwa deserves credit for placing women in positions where they can make a real difference,” he said.
He also said he remained committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s PAP delegation and strengthening governance through continental institutions. “I remain a proud member of Zimbabwe’s delegation to the PAP and will contribute in the best ways I can to good governance and Africa’s legislative architecture,” he said.
The report also noted that Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi previously served in the PAP delegation before taking up a Cabinet post, highlighting what some view as a pathway where experience in continental parliamentary work can build leadership skills for national roles.
While the birthday event was held in Harare, the developments are likely to resonate in Mashonaland Central, where residents continue to follow national policy shifts in digital development, postal services and courier regulation — areas that fall under Mavetera’s ministry.
