Police in Mashonaland Central have arrested a 49-year-old man from Mt Darwin after he allegedly struck his nephew on the head with an axe, reportedly mistaking him for an intruder after a night of drinking.
Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe identified the suspect as Dera Chimutondo (49), of Chimutondo Village. The complainant is Rinse Harrison (35).
Inspector Mundembe said the two had spent Sunday evening drinking together at Chimutondo Business Centre before agreeing that Harrison would sleep at his uncle’s homestead.
The incident is alleged to have occurred at around 8am on Monday, when Chimutondo woke up looking for his cellphone. Police said that, in a drunken state, he saw Harrison asleep inside the house and concluded that a thief had broken in.
He then allegedly picked up an axe and struck Harrison once on the head, police said.
Harrison managed to get outside, where a neighbour, Help Ndawana (52), assisted him. He was taken to Mt Darwin Hospital with a deep cut to the head.
Police said Harrison remains admitted at Mt Darwin Hospital and is now in a stable condition.
Chimutondo was subsequently arrested, Inspector Mundembe said.
The police spokesperson urged residents in Mt Darwin and across Mashonaland Central to drink responsibly and remain aware of their surroundings, saying the incident was an unfortunate event that could have ended in tragedy.
