Hundreds of mourners gathered at President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s homestead in Bikita on Sunday for the burial of his niece, Shamiso Mnangagwa, who died on Friday after a short illness.
The gathering brought together the Head of State, the First Family, senior Government officials, ZANU PF leadership and members of the local community, as relatives and friends paid their respects and shared tributes.
Those who spoke described Shamiso as kind, humble and respectful. The First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, said the family would cherish Shamiso’s life and the values she demonstrated, while urging mothers to remain positive role models and noting that children are supported by the wider community.
“Shamiso was a gentle, kind, and respectful woman. Whenever I visited this home, she was always the first to welcome me. The last time I came here, I was surprised that she did not come out to receive me. I assumed she had gone out, only to be told that she was unwell and was suffering from pain in her legs,” the First Lady said.
President Mnangagwa said Shamiso had shown promise and was remembered by the family for her character and talents.
“This young lady who has brought us together today. She has been taken so young and so promising. She was still a bright flower in the family. We thought she would have a longer life. She was a very talented young lady, and she was respectful. Hardworking and generally kind. She had a good education. She laughed at all times,” he said.
In his address, the President also thanked those who attended the burial, saying their presence strengthened the family during the period of mourning.
“I thank you all for coming to be with us as we mourn. This has eased our burden and made us strong as a family as we realise we have friends and family,” he said.
Senior ZANU PF officials and Government representatives were also present. Those mentioned among the leadership included politburo members Cde Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, Cde Lovemore Matuke and Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, as well as Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Ezra Chadzamira.
