Sungura star Alick Macheso is set to headline Africa Day celebrations in Gweru on Sunday, marking his first performance in the Midlands capital this year, according to event organisers.

The concert is expected to attract fans from across the province, with promoters billing it as a music-driven celebration of African unity and culture ahead of Africa Day, which is commemorated annually on 25 May.

Macheso will be backed by a line-up that includes MC Jah Soshea, DJ 007, Dave Harry, Core Vybz Band, Rigiyaan, Xiddo and Peter Pee. Organisers said the supporting acts are expected to bring a mix of Amapiano and Zimdancehall to broaden the event beyond sungura.

Show promoter Social Siwawa said the aim was to use entertainment to reinforce the meaning of the day. “Our goal is to ensure that both the older and younger generations continue to appreciate and understand the significance of Africa Day,” said Siwawa.

He added: “The show comes at the right time and, although it is themed as a Sungura Night, we have also included DJs and artistes from other genres to ensure everyone is entertained.”

Siwawa said preparations had been completed and that interest was strong across age groups. “The excitement from fans shows that sungura music remains relevant, even among the younger generation. Several Gen Z fans have expressed eagerness to watch the sungura legend perform live,” he said.

Some fans have already shared their expectations for the show. Shantel Jenya of Mkoba suburb said she was looking forward to seeing Macheso perform live. “I’ve never had the opportunity to attend Baba Sharo’s previous shows, but I’ve always loved his music. This time, I’m definitely not missing out,” she said.

Jayden Phiri from Shurugwi said the concert would be a family outing. “I grew up listening to Macheso because he’s my father’s favourite musician, but I was too young to attend his shows before. This time, my dad is taking me with him,” he said.

Africa Day marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), in 1963, and is observed as a day recognising African unity, cultural diversity and resilience.
