Geo Pomona Waste Management on Saturday hosted a delegation from the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), led by ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi, as Zimbabwe prepares to host the COSAFA Elective Congress in Harare.

According to a report by Express Mail Zim, the visitors toured sports facilities at the waste management site, including a FIFA-certified football pitch as well as tennis and basketball courts.

A Geo Pomona official who guided the delegation said the tour highlighted the firm’s corporate social responsibility work through sport.

“What struck the visitors the most is our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. They saw firsthand how we are impacting lives through sport not only in our community but in the nation, building hope, discipline and opportunity,” the official was quoted as saying.

The official also pointed to what he described as the transformation of the site, saying the FIFA-certified pitch had been built on land that was once a dumpsite.

“What makes this even more beautiful is the story of transformation behind it all. To have a FIFA-certified football pitch standing within a waste management facility on land that was once a dumpsite is nothing short of remarkable. From trash to treasure, from garbage to glory. That’s our legacy,” he said.

Geo Pomona also thanked Magwizi and the COSAFA delegation for acknowledging the company’s work.

The visit came ahead of the COSAFA Elective Congress scheduled for Sunday, where member associations are expected to vote for a new COSAFA Executive Committee by secret ballot, according to the COSAFA website.

High-level attendance is anticipated. CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe is scheduled to attend the congress in Harare, while FIFA officials Gelson Fernandes and Solomon Mudege are also listed as guests.

The official candidate list includes eight contenders for positions on the Executive Committee, among them Magwizi, who is contesting for an Executive Committee seat.
