A Guruve man, Anymore Zvitsva, has been sentenced to an effective 89 years in prison after being convicted on charges including rape, attempted murder and robbery, NewsDay has reported.

According to the report, Zvitsva was convicted by a Harare magistrate on 10 counts of rape, as well as attempted murder and robbery, following a string of violent crimes in the Guruve area of Mashonaland Central.

The development has drawn fresh attention to community safety in Guruve and neighbouring districts, amid concerns from residents about whether other people may have been involved in the crimes and what the motive may have been.

NewsDay reported that Zvitsva is still facing further proceedings at the High Court on numerous counts of murder in Mashonaland Central.

His arrest brought some relief to the Guruve community, the report said, although questions remain among residents regarding possible accomplices.

The case is expected to continue in the courts as outstanding matters are dealt with.
