A 34-year-old man from Mutare, who is accused of murdering his wife, has been denied bail after asking the court to release him so he could assist with funeral arrangements and attend her burial.

Tawanda Muradzikwa, of Chikanga suburb, is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of his 41-year-old wife, Samantha Chuma, who was allegedly killed last Wednesday evening.

Muradzikwa appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate Ms Annia Ndiraya last Friday to apply for bail. The court heard that he asked for permission to visit his late wife’s burial site and take part in funeral preparations.

According to the report, Muradzikwa appeared “visibly shaken and confused” during the proceedings as he made his request.

The magistrate denied the bail application, citing the seriousness of the allegation, and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

The court heard that the murder allegation arose after a dispute over the care of their children. It was alleged Muradzikwa confronted Chuma for leaving their four-month-old baby unattended while she spent several hours at a local bar.

The case remains before the courts.
