The Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF) has alleged that armed police raided its offices in Harare late on Tuesday night and seized T-shirts, flyers and other items, hours after the group said its Harare programmes director, Mr Paul Gorekore, had been arrested.
In its account, CDF said police earlier raided Mr Gorekore’s home in Mbare before arresting him. The group said the later raid on its offices happened just after 11pm.
CDF said armed officers arrived in two pick-up trucks at offices located in the same building as Biti Law Chambers, the firm run by CDF leader Mr Tendai Biti. According to the organisation, the officers confronted a security guard, who fled, before they entered the CDF office a floor above the law firm and removed several items.
The organisation said it would compile an inventory of what was taken.
In a statement issued before the reported raid on its offices, CDF condemned what it described as the arrest and detention of Mr Gorekore following “an unlawful entry and search at his house by the ZRP”.
“We view this as an attempt to intimidate citizens and activists exercising their constitutional rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful civic participation,” CDF said.
The group called on police “to act strictly in accordance with the law, respect due process, and immediately release him without charge”.
CDF also linked the developments to its activism against Constitutional Amendment Bill (No. 3), stating: “Advocating against the Constitutional Amendment Bill (No. 3) is not a crime. We remain vigilant and resolute in defending constitutionalism and the rights of all citizens.”
Police had not responded to the claims in the material provided.
