President Emmerson Mnangagwa has emphasised that under the Second Republic, there is no place for divisive and antagonistic forces that breed hatred, reiterating the sacredness of Zimbabwe’s national unity during the 38th Unity Day Anniversary celebrations.

Addressing the nation, the President said no attempts to divide Zimbabwe will succeed, calling for every citizen to recommit to protecting the unity that serves as a critical pillar of nationhood. He urged Zimbabweans to avoid allowing personal differences to become sources of division.

The Unity Accord, signed on 22 December 1987 by the nation’s liberation leaders, the late former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, was hailed as a historic milestone that ushered in lasting peace and laid the foundation for Zimbabwe’s progress and development.

President Mnangagwa highlighted Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts towards realising an empowered upper-middle-income society, building on successes under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the recently launched NDS2, which focuses on industrialisation, value addition, and inclusive growth.

He noted significant achievements across agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism, and infrastructure development sectors, attributing these advancements to the unity, peace, and stability enjoyed nationwide.

The President also acknowledged challenges including the impact of Western-imposed unilateral sanctions but affirmed the country’s resolve to continue on a people-centred development path.

He called for unity across Zimbabwe’s diverse cultural, linguistic, and tribal landscape, underscoring a collective identity under one flag and anthem, with pride stretching from Zambezi to Limpopo and Plumtree to Mutare. The values enshrined in the Unity Accord remain foundational as Zimbabwe modernises and industrialises.

Government’s support for national healing initiatives, such as the Gukurahundi National Outreach Programme led by traditional leaders, was also reaffirmed as part of efforts to promote reconciliation.

President Mnangagwa concluded by stressing that differences in opinions should be resolved through dialogue, honouring the ethos inherited from Zimbabwe’s founding fathers.
