Zanu-PF’s decisive win in the Nkulumane parliamentary by-election reflects changing political dynamics in Bulawayo, with the ruling party reclaiming a seat long regarded as an opposition stronghold.
National Political Commissar Cde Munyaradzi Machacha attributed the victory to Zanu-PF First Secretary and President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa’s logistical support and inspiration, alongside the relentless efforts of the party’s leadership and provincial teams.
The by-election, held on Saturday after the seat became vacant due to the death of incumbent legislator Mr Desire Moyo in October, saw Zanu-PF candidate Cde Freedom Murechu win with 3,416 votes, significantly ahead of his closest rival, independent candidate Rodney Jele, who secured 745 votes.
Cde Machacha highlighted voter frustration with urban underdevelopment and the perceived collapse of services under opposition-led Bulawayo City Council as factors influencing the electorate’s decision to back Zanu-PF. He forecast further successes for the party amid opposition disunity and a lack of credible development programmes.
The total voter turnout was 22.7 percent of the 22,833 registered voters in the constituency.
In a statement, Cde Murechu expressed gratitude to the residents of Nkulumane for their peaceful participation and pledged to prioritise community needs, especially the vulnerable. He emphasised unity and the spirit of hope that characterised the election and committed to delivering improvements in infrastructure, youth empowerment, and economic sustainability.
Zanu-PF District Co-ordinating Committee Area 5 chairperson, Cde Mnothisi Nsingo, described the win as a historic victory that strengthens the party’s position in Bulawayo and further signals growing public confidence in the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa’s leadership.
