Businessman and ZANU PF Central Committee member Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei attended ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera’s 40th birthday celebrations in Harare on Tuesday night, where he delivered brief remarks but declined to disclose details of a gift he said he and his wife had prepared for her.
According to a report by Express Mail Zim, Tagwirei described Mavetera as “someone I can look up to when things are down and when they are going well,” and said she also attends his family events, including his son’s recent wedding.
On the gift, Tagwirei said he would not reveal it publicly, telling the minister: “Mangwana mopfuura nekubasa moona maiguru, motaura navo moona zvatakakugadzirirai, tavakutya social media inotikanganisira zvinhu zvakanaka.”
He explained the remark as a light-hearted reference to avoiding what he called social media scrutiny, with the report noting that he spoke jokingly while deliberately withholding details.
The report said Tagwirei also traced parts of Mavetera’s working life, referring to her role on Zimbabwe’s television soap Studio 263, where she played the character Tendai Jari. He went on to say that after the programme she worked as a money changer during what he described as the 2005 to 2009 period.
“After Studio 263, she became a money changer and I see a lot of faces that changed money with her in this room. That was the period 2005-2009 thereabouts. It was her first job where she was hustling,” Tagwirei was quoted as saying.
Express Mail Zim reported that Tagwirei suggested Mavetera overcame barriers in a society he implied is male-dominated, attributing her rise to hard work and determination.
The event was attended by ZANU PF national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, business leaders and other guests, the report said.
