Zimbabwe is developing a new digital verification system aimed at curbing the circulation of fake academic documents, including fraudulent O Level certificates, diplomas and degrees.

The project, called the National Qualifications and Credentials Platform, was announced by Smelisiwe Visvanda, the Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development. The platform is expected to allow qualifications to be verified instantly and securely once it is fully implemented.

Authorities say the move is meant to address the long-running challenge of forged qualifications, which has cost the country money and undermined confidence in recruitment processes and education standards.

The platform is set to build on the Zimbabwe National Qualifications Framework (ZNQF), introduced in 2018 to standardise qualifications across basic education, technical and vocational training, and higher education. While the ZNQF focused on aligning standards and strengthening quality assurance, the new system is intended to add secure digital authentication and reduce reliance on manual checks that can be manipulated or forged.

When operational, the central database is expected to be accessible for verification by employers, universities, regulatory bodies such as the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE), as well as individuals seeking to confirm the authenticity of their own credentials.

Government expects the platform to make recruitment and admissions processes easier, improve trust in Zimbabwean qualifications, and reduce opportunities for fraud linked to counterfeit academic documents.

The system is still under development and no completion date was provided in the information released.
