Community engagement remains central to sustainable development, particularly where programmes are designed to respond to local needs and priorities. In practice, it means more than informing residents about initiatives; it requires communities to take an active role in shaping, owning and leading development work intended to improve their lives.
When community members participate fully, programmes are more likely to be understood, trusted and sustained over time. This approach also supports the broader development principle of ensuring that no one and no place is left behind by helping tailor services to the realities on the ground in places such as Bindura and surrounding districts in Mashonaland Central.
Community engagement can be strengthened through several methods, including field visits, advocacy and awareness campaigns. In Mashonaland Central, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has recently intensified advocacy and awareness efforts on family planning (FP) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) through radio programming on Abiyangu FM.

The radio programmes are aimed at ensuring that communities across Mashonaland Central are better informed about family planning and SRH services, as well as the work being carried out by ZNFPC in the province.
According to information shared on the ongoing campaign, the broadcasts are scheduled for Tuesdays at 11.30am and Thursdays at 4.00pm. The sessions are intended to support information dissemination, encourage dialogue, and link residents to available services and community access points.
The campaign also highlights Youth Friendly Centres in the province, including Shamva and Madziwa, which are set aside to provide information and services for young people and the wider community.
By using radio to reach communities consistently, the programme seeks to build understanding, improve uptake of services, and promote community ownership of local family planning and SRH initiatives—an approach that can strengthen long-term participation and sustainability of health programmes in Mashonaland Central.
