The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works says it is mobilising support and strengthening partnerships to assist in the repatriation of Zimbabwean nationals currently gathered at several centres in South Africa following recent developments in that country.
In a public statement dated June 21, 2026, the Ministry said the work is being carried out through the Department of Civil Protection, with coordinated support efforts involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
The Ministry said the focus is on facilitating the “safe and dignified return” of affected citizens back home, with assistance being mobilised including food provisions, temporary shelter and transportation from South Africa to designated reception centres in Zimbabwe.
Government is also drawing on the Emergency Fund to mobilise resources to support and fund the workstream as part of national humanitarian response efforts, the statement said.
The Ministry said it has, to date, engaged “more than five organisations” that are already supporting the repatriation programme and expressed gratitude for what it described as assistance and solidarity shown by partners and stakeholders.
The Ministry appealed for additional support from the private sector, humanitarian agencies, development partners, non-governmental organisations, church organisations and other well-wishers to strengthen ongoing repatriation efforts and other Civil Protection activities.
It also said relevant departments have been activated to receive returnees at the border and within communities to support their integration.
“The response to this escalating situation requires a whole of government and of society approach,” the Ministry said, adding appreciation for organisations and individuals who continue to support Government in responding to humanitarian needs and national emergencies.
For families in Mashonaland Central, the Ministry’s announcement comes as communities prepare to receive relatives and neighbours returning from South Africa, with authorities indicating that reception and reintegration processes have been activated.
