Karanda Mission Hospital in Mount Darwin is expanding services and upgrading infrastructure as demand for rural healthcare continues to grow, hospital officials have said.
The mission facility, founded in 1961 by The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM), is located about 200km north-east of Harare and serves communities across northern Zimbabwe. It remains a major provider of what officials described as affordable healthcare in underserved areas.
Hospital leaders shared the institution’s growth plans, capacity and challenges during a media tour this week.
Medical superintendent Dr Takudzwa Sasa said the hospital has grown into a major health centre that treats thousands of patients every year.
“Karanda Mission Hospital was established in 1961 with the mission to provide accessible, quality healthcare. Over the years, it has grown to become a reputable facility serving thousands of patients annually across the region,” said Dr Sasa.
According to the figures provided, the hospital has a capacity of 165 beds and treats about 140 000 patients each year. It carries out more than 51 000 outpatient consultations annually and performs around 4 000 surgical procedures.
Services offered include general medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery, dental care, laboratory diagnostics, emergency treatment and maternal health programmes.
Dr Sasa said the hospital employs more than 278 professionals and is focusing on training and specialised expertise to sustain service delivery. “Our workforce of more than 278 professionals ensures quality and safe care through continuous training and specialised expertise,” he said.
He added that Karanda is investing in new diagnostic equipment, expanding wards and introducing advanced surgical procedures, alongside specialised outpatient clinics for chronic diseases.
“We are expanding services, upgrading diagnostic equipment and introducing advanced surgical procedures and outpatient chronic care clinics,” said Dr Sasa.
Hospital officials said the projects are intended to improve efficiency, increase patient capacity and strengthen the institution’s ability to respond to rising healthcare needs in the region.
Operating under the motto “Serving God, Serving Others”, Karanda combines faith-based community care with medical services while adhering to standards set by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
Hospital leadership said partnerships with the private sector, development organisations and local communities would be important in addressing resource constraints and improving access to healthcare in remote areas. Officials also appealed for support towards priority needs, including modern medical equipment and staff accommodation, arguing sustained investment is necessary to maintain quality services.
Stakeholders at the briefing stressed that stronger health systems, reliable funding and community participation are central to improving health outcomes and supporting national development.
Karanda Mission Hospital remains one of Zimbabwe’s busiest mission hospitals, providing specialist maternal health, emergency and referral services to communities across Mashonaland Central and neighbouring districts.
