Resurfacing works on the 35-kilometre Glendale–Nzvimbo Road in Chiweshe, Mashonaland Central, are now under way as part of the Government’s national road rehabilitation programme.
Contractors have moved heavy machinery onto the route, which links Glendale with surrounding communities in Chiweshe. Residents and transport operators say the improvements are already easing long-standing transport difficulties, including delays and unsafe sections.
Clayton Homwe, a resident of Majome village, said the works have reduced travel time and made it easier for vehicles to use the road, but warned that increased speeding is now a concern. “We welcomed the road rehabilitation. It has improved travel already, and we are taking shorter travel time. This is a good development for our area, and cars are moving easily now, but we would want speed humps because vehicles are now speeding,” Homwe said.
Public transport operators also welcomed the project, citing potential reductions in vehicle damage and improved safety for passengers and other road users. Washington Dangirwa, a bus driver, said better road conditions should help curb accidents and reduce wear and tear, while also calling for attention to other local routes. “I’m a bus driver, and I’m happy that our Government is building roads. They should extend them further. We are also happy with the resurfacing as it will reduce accidents and make the road safer. However, we also hope other damaged roads, like the one to Musarara village, are repaired as well,” Dangirwa said.

IMC Construction, which is undertaking the works, said the resurfacing is expected to be completed within the next two months. Flashdance Madzudzo, the company’s asphalt supervisor, said the programme is being implemented in line with the Government’s wider infrastructure development agenda.
“We are working in line with the vision of His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa of building our roads kilometre by kilometre. We are resurfacing 35 kilometres of the road from Glendale to Chiweshe. We started at Rosa, going towards Glendale, and we are also going to construct a road that reaches the Rosa Clinic,” Madzudzo said.
The Glendale–Nzvimbo Road rehabilitation is among several infrastructure projects in Mashonaland Central, with authorities also pointing to major works such as the dualisation of the Harare–Angwa–Kanyemba Road.
Officials say these projects fall under National Development Strategy Two (NDS2), which places infrastructure modernisation among key drivers for economic growth, improved connectivity and better service delivery. For communities along the Glendale–Nzvimbo corridor, residents say the next priority should be road safety measures, including speed management, to match the improved surface conditions.
