Zimbabwean super-featherweight boxer Ndodana Ncube has died in hospital in Middelburg, South Africa, several weeks after collapsing at the end of a fight he won on points, according to reports from the local boxing community and additional reporting cited by NewZimbabwe.

Ncube had been in a coma following the bout, which took place at Eastdene Community Hall in Middelburg, Mpumalanga province. He reportedly collapsed after a closely fought contest against Lunga Stimela. Accounts from the boxing community indicate the two fighters accidentally clashed heads during the fight, continued to the final bell, and Ncube was declared the winner on points.

Paramedics provided emergency treatment at the venue before he was taken to hospital, where he was later moved to intensive care. He reportedly underwent emergency surgery on 28 March to remove a blood clot from his brain.

In the days before his death, a local coach was quoted as saying Ncube briefly opened his eyes and attempted to communicate, raising hopes he might recover.
