The High Court in Masvingo has sentenced Simbarashe Zano (35), of Village Nherere under Chief Marozva in Bikita, to 16 years in prison for the murder of Gift Mudyiwa (32), who was from the same village.
The incident occurred on 15th March 2022, when Zano and Mudyiwa were drinking beer at Mugabe Bar. Later that night, Mudyiwa went to Brian Bandauko’s shop to buy more beer. The following morning, at approximately 5:00 AM, a witness spotted Zano near Chinhamo Business Centre bus stop dragging a heavy object. The witness recognised Zano by his dreadlocks and the blue T-shirt he had been wearing the previous day.
Upon noticing the witness, Zano fled the scene. Shortly after, at around 5:30 AM, Mudyiwa’s body was discovered near the bus stop. He was lying face down in a pool of blood, with injuries to his head and blood coming from his mouth and nose. A log was found nearby, believed to have been used in the attack.
Police attended the scene at 8:00 AM, and Mudyiwa’s body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The results confirmed that the cause of death was severe head injuries and blunt trauma. Zano went into hiding following the discovery of the body but was eventually arrested in October 2023.
