A businessman based in Chief Negomo chiefdom, has been handed a 15-year custodial sentence following his conviction for the rape of his 23-year-old female employee.
The Bindura Regional Court passed the judgement on 22 February 2025, following a harrowing account of workplace abuse which prosecutors described as a “gross violation of trust and power.”
The incident took place after the victim, who worked at a tuck shop owned by the accused, requested permission to close early and go home. Instead, she was directed behind the shop under the pretence of accompanying him to a gathering.
Once isolated, the man reportedly locked the premises, undressed, and brandished a knife to threaten the woman before committing the assault.
Midway through the trial, prosecutors presented damning evidence that underscored the calculated nature of the attack. “He used intimidation and manipulation to corner the victim, exploiting her economic vulnerability,” read part of the submission by the National Prosecuting Authority.
