Gang Raids Harare Church, Escapes with US$8,000 in Cash

A gang of eight armed robbers staged a daring late-night raid at a church in Harare’s Belvedere suburb, escaping with US$8,000 in cash after attacking a security guard and a congregant.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 11 May 2025, at Hudson Avenue, where the gang forcibly entered the church premises, assaulted those present, and ransacked offices before fleeing with the money.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the attack, stating:
“Police in Harare are investigating a case of robbery at a church along Hudson Avenue, Belvedere, which occurred at approximately 0030 hours on 11 May 2025.
Eight unidentified suspects assaulted a security guard and a congregant, before looting US$8,000 in cash from the church offices.”
The robbers used the congregant’s Toyota IST (registration number ACT 8786) as their getaway vehicle, speeding off before authorities arrived.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating a separate armed robbery in Bulawayo, where three assailants stormed a bar at the corner of 13th Avenue and Robert Mugabe Way around 10:00 AM on Sunday, targeting employees as they counted the day’s takings.
“The suspects held staff hostage, then fled with US$4,300 in cash before police arrived on the scene,” Nyathi stated.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.
